When we share clips of our seniors dancing and singing at First Senior Center<\/strong>, we sometimes get critical comments. People say seniors should be at home, helping their children, instead of coming to a center to have fun.<\/p>\n

They might simply think of it as a “luxury pastime”<\/strong> for the elderly.<\/p>\n

But for many Vietnamese seniors who migrated to the United States, these activities mean so much more: this is a critical form of therapy, an essential survival mechanism.<\/strong> \u2018<\/p>\n

More Than Just Loneliness<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our parents and grandparents in the U.S. aren’t just dealing with old age. They carry the burden of “migration trauma”<\/strong> from the war and their painful journey, along with the stress of navigating a completely foreign culture.<\/p>\n

This stress is compounded because they often can’t find a safe place to express their feelings. The language barrier is the biggest wall<\/strong>. Imagine: More than 80% of elderly Vietnamese in the U.S. speak little or no English<\/strong>. When they are sad or in pain, they struggle to find doctors or therapists who can truly listen and understand them in Vietnamese.<\/p>\n

As a result, their worries and sorrows become suppressed, building up day after day, leading to toxic conditions like depression, cognitive decline, and mental disorders<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

THE TRUTH: Activities are their Essential Lifeline<\/strong><\/p>\n

The reality is that social interactions, singing, dancing, and talking with fellow countrymen serve as an invaluable mental and spiritual therapy.<\/p>\n

When they can socialize comfortably in their mother tongue<\/strong>, hear familiar stories, and sing together:<\/p>\n

  • Our seniors are able to return to and reinforce their own cultural identity<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • They feel like they belong to an ethnic community<\/strong>, escaping the devastating effects of social isolation (marginalization)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • This is a powerful “precious remedy” against loneliness<\/strong>, and it even helps them cope better with physical health issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    If you are currently living with your older parents or grandparents, please open your heart and understand the deep wounds they carry from the past.<\/p>\n
